SPIRIT JUICE: AN INCH OF TIME

"An inch of time is an inch of gold, but an inch of gold cannot buy an inch of time."

—Wang Zhenbai, Tang Dynasty

Read that again.

An inch of gold cannot buy an inch of time.

Gold can be recovered.

Time cannot.

Money can be replaced.

Time cannot.

Possessions can be lost and reacquired.

Yesterday cannot.

And yet...

We spend time as though we have an infinite supply.

We trade hours for things we'll eventually throw away.

We give our attention to people we've never met...

while the people we love sit three feet away.

We scroll through moments that will never return.

We postpone prayer.

Postpone forgiveness.

Postpone the conversation.

Postpone the good deed.

"I'll do it tomorrow."

But tomorrow isn't yours.

Today is.

That's why Scripture says:

"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."

Notice what the Psalmist doesn't say:

Teach us to lengthen our days.

Teach us to control our days.

Teach us to predict our days.

He says:

Number them.

Count them.

Recognize that they're finite.

Because mortality isn't supposed to make us despair.

It's supposed to make us awake.

Here's where Christianity gets even deeper.

Time isn't merely something you're moving through.

Time is forming you.

Every hour becomes an opportunity to love.

Every interruption becomes an opportunity for patience.

Every temptation becomes an opportunity for courage.

Every suffering becomes an opportunity to unite yourself to Christ.

Every ordinary Tuesday becomes another brick in the cathedral of a soul.

You're not simply spending your life.

You're becoming someone with it.

That's why wasting time isn't merely inefficient.

Sometimes...

it's spiritually tragic.

Because you can never go back and love someone yesterday.

You can never go back and pray yesterday's prayer.

You can never go back and choose yesterday's virtue.

The moment passes.

Forever.

But here's the mercy:

This moment is still here.

Right now.

This breath.

This conversation.

This choice.

This little sliver of time...

is still yours to offer to God.

You don't need to fix your entire life tonight.

You need to sanctify this moment.

Put down the phone.

Look at the person in front of you.

Say the prayer.

Make the apology.

Do the work.

Call your mother.

Hug your child.

Go to Confession.

Receive the Eucharist.

Forgive.

Serve.

Be present.

Because eternity isn't built out of extraordinary days.

It's entered through ordinary ones.

And one day...

There will be an inch of time left.

Then a breath.

Then no more breaths.

And when that final moment arrives, gold won't matter.

The house won't matter.

The résumé won't matter.

The followers won't matter.

The argument you won won't matter.

What will matter is what you became...

...and whether you learned to love.

So don't ask:

"How much time do I have?"

Ask:

"What am I doing with the time I've been given?"

Because every second is a gift...

Every moment is a choice...

And every choice is shaping an immortal soul.

Spend your time like it is precious.

Give it like it is sacred.

Live it like it belongs to God.

Because an inch of gold cannot buy an inch of time...

but an inch of time, offered to God in love, can echo into eternity.

Psalm 90:12"Teach us to number our days, that we may gain a heart of wisdom."

Ephesians 5:15–16"Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, making the best use of the time, because the days are evil."
