Introduction
Deepening our understanding of Scripture and the Church Fathers can sometimes feel like a daunting task. Whether you are new to the faith or a lifelong Catholic, the language of scripture and the Saints can be complex. That is why I have created a special companions for my books: The Layman's Reconnaissance Study Partners.
What is a "Study Partner"?
The study partners are Google Gemini "Gems." Think of these Gems as a digital tutors that have 'read' the primary sources I use. It is a custom-built AI designed to stay within the guardrails of Catholic tradition. You can ask it questions, ask for simplified explanations, or even ask how a specific Church Father’s teaching applies to your life today.
How to Get Started (3 Simple Steps)
Sign In: You will need a Google/Gmail account to access the Gem. This keeps your conversation private to you.
Click the Link: Use one of the Faith Study Partner buttons (on the home page) to open the specific Study Partner to help with questions you may have (related to scripture, the catechism, and writings of the Church Fathers.
Remember, one partner gives pretty "basic" and "uncomplicated" answers while the other will allow you to "dig" into specific topics/questions.
Say Hello: Once it opens, just type: "Can you help me understand [Topic]?" or "What did the Church Fathers say about [Topic]?"
Try These Prompts (or come up with your own):
"Explain St. Augustine’s view on grace like I'm a beginner."
"Read John 6 (the Bread of Life discourse). How does the Catholic Church use this specific chapter to explain its teaching on the Real Presence in the Eucharist?"
"I am feeling overwhelmed with stress at work lately. Can you find three verses from the Psalms that offer comfort, and explain how a Catholic might use them in a short morning prayer?"
Tips for your New Users:
Don't be afraid to push back: If you don't like an answer, you can say, "That feels a bit too formal, can you make it more conversational?"
The "Verify" Rule: Remember, while the Gem is a great guide, the Magisterium is the ultimate authority. It’s a tool for study, not a replacement for the Word or the Church.
