Spirit Juice: DON'T WAIT FOR THE STORM
Matthew 10:16-23 Coming Persecutions
See, I am sending you out like sheep into the midst of wolves; so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves. Beware of them, for they will hand you over to councils and flog you in their synagogues; and you will be dragged before governors and kings because of me, as a testimony to them and the Gentiles. When they hand you over, do not worry about how you are to speak or what you are to say; for what you are to say will be given to you at that time; or it is not you who speak, but the Spirit of your Father speaking through you. Brother will betray brother to death, and a father his child, and children will rise against parents and have them put to death; and you will be hated by all because of my name. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next; for truly I tell you, you will not have gone through all the towns of Israel before the Son of Man comes.
Everyone wants to know what they would do if the day ever came.
"If my faith was challenged..."
"If I lost everything..."
"If I had to stand alone..."
"If persecution came to my doorstep..."
But that's the wrong question.
Because courage isn't created in the storm.
It's revealed there.
The oak doesn't grow during the hurricane.
It simply shows the strength of roots that have been growing for decades.
The same is true of disciples.
Nobody accidentally becomes a martyr.
Nobody accidentally becomes courageous.
Nobody accidentally stands firm.
Those things are forged long before anyone is watching.
In ordinary mornings.
In hidden prayers.
In quiet acts of obedience.
In choosing truth when lying would be easier.
In forgiving when revenge feels justified.
In showing up when nobody applauds.
Jesus never promised His followers comfort.
He promised His presence.
"Be wise as serpents and innocent as doves."
Notice...
He didn't say become wolves.
He didn't tell us to hate those who hate us.
He didn't command us to outshout the crowd.
He called us to be wise...Without becoming cynical.
Courageous...Without becoming cruel.
Convicted...Without becoming bitter.
That's Christian strength.
The saints understood something we've forgotten.
Fortitude isn't the absence of fear.
It's the refusal to let fear become your master.
The world prepares for emergencies by stockpiling supplies.
The Kingdom prepares by stockpiling virtue.
Patience.
Justice.
Prudence.
Temperance.
Faith.
Hope.
Love.
Because when pressure comes...Whatever is inside you comes out.
Boiling water doesn't create what's within the tea bag.
It reveals it.
The same is true of us.
Pressure doesn't build character overnight.
It exposes the character we've been building all along.
So don't wait for the crisis.
Train today.
Pray today.
Forgive today.
Read Scripture today.
Receive the Eucharist today.
Serve today.
Love today.
The Christian life isn't preparation for comfort.
It's preparation for faithfulness.
And when the storm finally comes...
You won't rise to the occasion.
You'll fall to the level of your formation.
So build your soul now.
One prayer.
One act of courage.
One faithful day at a time.
